“Personalized medicine is the wave of the future. Imagine having a plan that is just for you, made for you. Together we can develop a plan specifically for your needs and your genetic makeup.”
I’m Dr. Debra Hummel and I am a board-certified adult nurse practitioner practicing in San Carlos, California.
Throughout my career, I knew that something was missing in conventional western medicine. Western medicine is very good at putting on a bandaid to many chronic illnesses and giving a pill for every ill, but I knew that there something more. Something missing in how we treat many chronic illnesses.
I have the belief that the body can heal itself with the right nourishment of sleep, food, movement, and rest and restoration. The synergy of mind, body, spirit. This became apparent when I received the humbling diagnosis of breast cancer. I pondered why this happened to me; I had no risk factors and I thought I was healthy. It was at that point that began to take a deep dive into my own health and to uncover the root cause. In addition to conventional treatments of surgery and chemotherapy, I immersed myself in alternative practices of meditation, yoga, sauna therapy, organic foods, rest, and restoring my faith.
In 2018, I began my extensive study in Integrative and Functional Medicine. In the Summer 2020 I will complete my Integrative Medicine Fellowship with Dr Andrew Weil at the Center of Integrative Medicine. I have also begun my Functional Medicine training with the Institute of Functional Medicine with expected completion in 2021. I continue to learn and immerse myself in many different healing modalities.
